25-04-2011 - Marantz service training
Johan recently attended a Marantz Service Training conference in Dusseldorf Germany. It was a fantastic opportunity for Johan to exchange thoughts and ideas about new Marantz product features and technologies, as well as tools and methods for quick and reliable failure diagnosing. Finally, the latest operating theory and troubleshooting techniques for the Marantz A/V circuits was relayed to the attendees.

All this fairs well for any product issues we may be confronted with going forward, especially with the ever increasingly complicated circuitry being built into these products. Obviously, the quicker we can diagnose any problem, the sooner we can have it repaired or replaced, and of course the quicker the product gets back to the owner. We have always prided ourselves with superb service turn-around times, and this is another step forward.

29-06-2010 - B&w's MT30 package Tops again

We are pleased to report that MT-30 has retained the top spot in a recent style speaker package group test in What Hi-Fi? Sound & Vision. Up against Dali Fazon 1, KEF KHT5005.2 and Monitor Audio R90HD12, our top of the range mini theatre package still reigns supreme thanks to, "its agile sub and insightful satellites." This is no mean feat seeing as the package has been around since 2005 and there is now a plethora of choices within this price bracket.

What Hi-Fi? comments that, "the M-1 satellites take up the baton and deliver a sound with scale and space that's unrivalled here.." and that the, "curvaceous subwoofer is the star of the show, with muscular, agile and tight bass lines."

20-05-2010 - Bowers & Wilkins DB1 is here
When it comes to getting maximum enjoyment from movies and music, bass is where the action is. And for serious bass, you’re going to need a seriously powerful subwoofer.

But power is only half of the story. To fully convey the visceral impact of an explosion, or the thrilling sweep of an orchestral score, you also need control. The kind of control that stops sonic distortion dead in its tracks, no matter how hard you push the speaker. And the fast response required to bring nuance and pin-sharp definition even to the biggest, most powerful bass effects.

Control. It’s the rare quality that puts the DB1 head and shoulders above the rest. Combine it with the awesome power derived from its  dedicated amplifier, and you have a subwoofer that puts you right at the heart of the action.

With its traditional box shape, the DB1 looks similar to any other subwoofer at first glance. But look again, and you’ll start to notice some of the differences that make the DB1 such a radical step forward in subwoofer design. We’ve packed in groundbreaking technologies like a dedicated 1,000W amplifier, Digital Signal Processing and a unique opposed-driver design. 06-04-2010 - JBL Everest review HFC

Musical Magnificence

Taking pride of place on the cover of April 2010's Hi Fi Choice and picking up a coveted Editor's Choice award, the magnificent JBL Everest speakers have left an indelible impression on reviewer Paul Messenger. Awe-struck by their beauty, scale and brilliant sound, he says "the truly marvellous feature of this extraordinary speaker is its utterly magnificent headroom...In fact, until this degree of headroom is actually experienced, it's hard to believe it makes much difference, but believe me it does. Tied in with this headroom is quite brilliant overall consistency. Play it whisper quiet...and you still hear everything that's going on...Turn it up as loud as you can...and every note is clear as crystal. The JBL doesn’t mind. It'll simply do its thing with impeccably smooth neutrality and wonderfully coherent voices."

24-11-2009 - Marantz produce winning combination... again

Marantz proudly announces that it has won two Golden awards in the category Best Buy! CD6003: Best CD Player under £500 and PM6003: Best Stereo Amp under £500.

Report What Hifi? Sound & Vision:
"Once given a few days to reach optimal performance, both these products shine. The CD player delivers the qualities Marantz always strives for: top-to-bottom cohesion throughout the frequency range, a full bodied midrange that lacks nothing for fluidity, and impressively layered sounds staging".

"The PM6003 is a straightforward amplifier. Use it in source direct mode – bypassing tone, loudness and balance controls – and you have an insightful unit that works well with everything from Wilco’s refreshingly under-produced self-titled album to Eminem’s deranged Relapse set".

"The sonic balance of both the CD player and amp is consistent and the two work together well enough for us to question the need to mix-and-match with rivals. If you like one of the 6003s, we’re certain you’ll like the other".

"There are some great products around and the introduction of this Marantz pair gives you yet another top-quality option at this price”.

14-01-2010 - Marantz UD9004 Universal Blu-ray player

UD9004 Universal Blu-ray player

Now the new medium is fixed and functionality for Blu-ray is fully specified including BD-Live Profile 2.0 it is time for Marantz to bring the ultimate player for picture and sound. Doesn’t matter what kind of disc will be insert, BD or DVD, CD or even SACD the performance will be outstanding and will bear even the most challenging tests of the most critical video- and audiophiles. UD9004 will give you state of the art quality of both audio and video. Starting with the very heavy loading mechanism equipped with a rigid aluminium tray, developed by our top engineers, eliminating distortion caused by vibration of the mechanism. On the video side the UD9004 makes use of the Silicon Realta Optix HQV processing technology derived from professional broadcast technologies. With true 10-bit processing for Detail Enhancement, Noise Reduction, Pixel to Pixel Film Mode Detection, De-interlacing and scaling and other treatments, the picture from DVD and Blu-ray is simply astonishing. The UD9004 has a copper plated chassis for best grounding at any point and is equipped with a strong power supply only feeding the analogue audio boards with clean current using a Toroidal transformer and customized capacitors. The circuitry uses the famous Marantz HDAM-SA2’s for all channels ensuring fast, precise and large bandwidth signal amplification. A dual HDMI output makes it possible to output a dedicated video and a dedicated audio signal to their output source, minimize the deleterious effect on the audio and video and reducing the signal degradation by shorter route and less processing. Be prepared for an exceptional presentation – get the third dimension into your reproduction, get the depth for your image and sound stage – make it 3D, make it as real as possible.

25-11-2009 - Classe CT Series introduced

Classé has been designing and manufacturing high-end electronics in Canada since 1980. Their passion for audio has not changed over the years but the technologies they use have become much more diverse and sophisticated. So have Classe customers.

Today, many of their products are destined for Home Theaters and they are often installed in professional equipment racks. Customers therefore need high-performance, high-power components that are tailored to the rack environment.

With the launch of the revolutionary Custom Theater (CT) series, such products finally exist.

The CT series is a completely new range of rack-mountable amplifiers and a surround sound processor. And it’s not just new. It is genuinely unique. It is the first range of world class high-end electronics to have been specifically designed for the reality of today’s home theater.

If you intend to build or upgrade a rack-based Home Theater, the CT series is for you. In addition to superb performance and awesome power, CT components benefit from an array of features tailored to life in an equipment rack.

Special features include:

Intelligent Cooling Tunnel

Conventional high-end amplifiers use heatsinks that are simply shaped pieces of metal which exploit the principle of high thermal mass. They are slow to heat up, slow to cool down, and they rely on placement and ambient air to extract heat from the amplifier.

ICTunnel™ - click image for larger view
CT Series - ICTunnel™ - click for larger view

However, they eventually heat up their environment and as the air around them gets hotter, they become part of the problem. For this reason, high-powered amps and racks or cabinets don’t easily mix.
The ICTunnel™ (aka the Icy Tunnel) is more sophisticated. The ICTunnel™ utilizes an aluminum bonded-fin heatsink, a technology usually reserved for high powered medical, laser and test equipment. It exploits the principle of low thermal mass, so it heats quickly but can also be cooled quickly. Inside its relatively small size are fins providing nearly 31 square feet of surface area. The key to its operation is how the fins are spaced—as close as possible to each other to maximize the surface area inside the tunnel, but not so close as to heat each other. The ICTunnel™ utilizes a noiseless fan along with pressure and temperature sensors to maintain the amplifier’s target temperature.

Detachable Quiet Flow™ Faceplate
Though crafted from solid, grade 6063-T6 aluminum, the CT faceplate is a component of the cooling system. The central panel is mounted offset from the faceplate, creating a large, hidden ventilation shaft. The large opening minimizes the sound of air flowing into the ICTunnel™. Dust is prevented from passing into the heatsink fins by a sensor-controlled washable filter which signals when it needs to be washed.

The faceplate is also detachable, virtually eliminating the risk of scratching during the installation process.

Adjustable Rack Rails
Adjustable rack rails* are included in the box with each CT series component. They attach to the front and back of the equipment rack and support the component along its sides. The unit is slid into place and secured to the equipment rack. This process allows heavy amplifiers to be more easily installed in the rack. It also enables dealers to assemble equipment racks for testing prior to installation and transport them safely to the job site.

*The rails can be adjusted to fit racks of 19.85” (504mm), 25.85” (657mm) and 30.85” (784mm) depth.

Far from old-school high-end audio, the CT series electronics is fresh thinking for today.

13-10-2009 - The Marantz NR1501 has arrived

The Marantz NR 1501 Is A Pint Sized Marvel!

About half the height of most surround receivers, the NR 1501 is a full-featured, red-blooded receiver.  If you've ever looked into a surround receiver, there's a lot of open air in there.  Many surround receivers are actually quite a bit taller than they need to be, simply because of legacy composite and S-Video switching boards.  Long known for innovation, Marantz engineers determined that by removing S-Video switching they could save a full 50% of rear panel space!  This would allow the NR 1501 to be quite a bit shorter, making it much more rack friendly.

Don't be fooled by the reduction in height, though.  This is a Marantz receiver through and through.  Marantz engineered audio combined with sufficient amplifier power for most small systems and HDMI decoding and switching makes the NR 1501 the receiver to beat at this price.

Key Features:

  • 7 channels of discrete amplification (50 watts x 7)
  • 4 HDMI 1.3 Inputs / 1 HDMI Output
  • Decoding of Dolby TrueHD & dts HD Master Audio
  • Transcoding of all Analog source to HDMI
  • Independent Audio Board for Improved Sound
  • Simple Set-up with MRAC Auto Calibration
  • On Screen Display
  • 3 Component Video Inputs / 1 Component Outputs
  • 5 Analog Audio Inputs / 3 Digital Audio Inputs
  • Slim Design – (Height – 90mm)
  • Detachable Power Cord
  • RC-5 Jacks
  • Glow Key Precoded Remote Control

Already available in Silvergold and black colour finish in South Africa - retail price R7,999 (incl VAT).

13-10-2009 - New Marantz SR5004 surround receiver

Marantz SR5004 Surround Receiver

It's that time of year again. Manufacturers are getting ready to release their new home theatre line-up. Here is one of the new surround receiver offerings from Marantz, the SR5004. The SR5004, naturally enough, replaces the SR5003. There are a host of changes and improvements in the new model, and all at the same price as the outgoing SR5003 (R10,999)

Among the new features included on the SR-5004 are:

            * Dolby ProLogic IIz

            * Audyssey Dynamic Volume

            * A new, GUI based on screen display for the SR-5004

            * Optional Bluetooth connectivity

            * Power upgraded from 90W (SR5003) to 100W into 8ohm

Look for the new SR5004 to be released in mid October 2009, as well the Marantz Blu-Ray and DVD player packages that are bundled with the SR5004.

17-08-2009 - Bowers & Wilkins CM9 Wins EISA Award
Bowers & Wilkins have been awarded an Eisa award for the CM9.

EUROPEAN Loudspeaker 2009-2010
Official quote from EISA:

“This handsome floorstanding loudspeaker offers tremendous value for money, and features B&W’s highly regarded FST midrange unit as part of a four-driver system. The woven Kevlar cone of the FST driver is swaged at its edge and rests on a ring of foamed plastic that acts in compression. This novel arrangement improves the driver’s dissipation of unwanted vibrations but limits its excursion, so the unit hands over to twin 165mm bass drivers, reflex loaded through a dimpled port, for deep and extended low frequencies. The speaker offers a healthy sensitivity but is reasonably tough to drive – weedy amplifiers need not apply! Suitably partnered, the CM9 offers a very lush sound, big and expressive with a very realistic sense of musical dynamics. It’s one of B&W’s most compelling floorstanders to date and at a price that seals its EISA commendation.”

17-08-2009 - Marantz SA8003 wins EISA award

We are pleased to announce that the Marantz SA8003 CD/SACD player has won this years EISA Award in the category 'Best Product Source Audio 2009/2010'.

Quote from EISA: "Modern audio players face many challenges and Marantz’s SA8003 meets them all. It plays CDs and the stereo tracks of SACDs. It handles MP3, AAC or WMA files via an advanced USB port, which can even control an iPod directly. Based on the successful SA7003, the SA8003 benefits from the work of Marantz’s ‘tuning wizard’ Ken Ishiwata, who has pushed the quality up to audiophile standards. This has been achieved through various technical and mechanical upgrades, including the use of Marantz’s trademark copper-plated chassis. You will find lots of other familiar Marantz ingredients in this player, such as powerful HDAM output stages and a low-noise disc drive. So it’s no wonder that the hugely versatile SA8003, available in champagne or black, is top among the players in its class."

27-09-2009 - Jaguar Launch - photos loaded

 Bowers & Wilkins and Jaguar

Jaguar South Africa approached HFX Systems as the Southern Africa Distributor of Bowers & Wilkins product to partner with them for the launch of the all new Jaguar XF model to the South African motoring journalists and selected clients including the celebrity Jaguar Ambassadors. It was a week long launch that included some audio & visual elements provided by HFX Systems. We were privileged to work with the very professional Jaguar marketing department that had the launch run like clockwork.

Each day consisted of the team starting at 05h30, collecting guests flying in across Gauteng and delivering them to Lanseria. A early morning session familiarised them with the latest changes and innovations on the new models followed by the first driving session for the day. A teatime stop at De Hoek had them attending more presentations incl. some classroom and actual in-car time on the Bowers & Wilkins sound system options for the various models. After lunch the group departed for a afternoon drive session in the mountainous surroundings of the Magalies Meander. Early evening arrival at Mount Grace gave them time to freshen up and sit down for a elegant meal to be concluded in the lounge where a full blown Bowers & Wilkins 800 series surround system powered by a Reference Classé Audio system provided entertainment into the early hours of the morning. Truly the way to finish a spectacular day behind the wheel of the leaping Cat. All in All a wonderful 5 days, packed with excitement and activities. Hats of to the Jaguar team on a stunning launch; it was a pleasure for HFX Systems and Bowers & Wilkins to be a part of this.

03-09-2009 - Ortofon launches Cadenza range
In music, a cadenza (from Italian: cadenza, meaning cadence) is, generically, an improvised or written-out ornamental passage played or sung by a soloist or soloists, usually in a "free" rhythmic style, and often allowing for virtuosic display. From this we can certainly learn that the name that was chosen for the new Ortofon range of moving coils has been aptly chosen, as the new range, consisting of a few different models, are certainly very musical and display serious virtuoso  talents. Building on the strengths of the technology of the MC Jubilee and other lessons that have been learnt with other of their moving coils the new range is set to make a huge impact on the market and
looks set to become very popular. There does not seem to be any plans afoot to discontinue the Kontrapunkt range but it would appear that the Cadenza models will also justify their more expensive price with improved sound.

The range consists of cartridges that seem to mimic the looks of the MC Jubilee to a very high degree and confirms the parental link to the Jubilee. As everybody knows the technology that initially came out with the Jubilee has now been widely adopted in their products and what appeared to be strange and unconventional has now been accepted as a serious move into new territories for Ortofon. The range has various models and they also include a dedicated mono cartridge. The finishes of the cartridges are all in black with central inserts that differ. The mono cartridge is white and the stereo units are Red, Blue, Bronze and Black. In a very shrewd move the finishes now mirror the other ranges as well to create uniformity (refer the 2M range and the MC Rondo range that both feature similar finishes).

Only one review seems to have been released which appeared in Hi-Fi World, August 2009 edition, in which both the Bronze and Blue have received 5 globes. High praise indeed! We are looking forward to receiving our first stock and will do a follow-up report as soon as we have had time to test them.

20-07-2009 - So where do you get your records?

So you eventually bought the turntable! (or you already have one…)

The one question that we get asked very often is: “So where do you get your records?” With the vinyl revival now having been well and truly established over the past few years, many conventional hi-fi users have either bought themselves turntables, or have been pressing old existing units back into service. For the existing users a new and more recent and modern cartridge is the most obvious route to follow. The majority of turntable users have records collections. But turntables cannot produce music on their own. Records fuel the turntable fire. So where do you get records?

The most obvious place (and logically also the most popular nowadays) is the Internet. There really are no longer any suppliers that do not have secure payment facilities, with credit card being the preferential payment method. Shipping times from USA and Europe in general takes roughly 7 to 14 days. There are a few sites that will really take the headaches out of shopping easily over the Internet, listed herewith:

  1. Acoustic Sounds – www.acousticsounds.com is probably the granddaddy of all sites and also one of the very first to set the standards as far as Internet trade was concerned. They remain a strong and constant force and have the advantage of being able to sell their own recordings directly as they own Blue Heaven Recording studios and have recorded many artists.
  2. Music Direct – www.musicdirect.com is very similar to Acoustic Sounds and has a fairly similar business strategy and approach.
  3. Elusive Disc – www.elusivedisc.com is also very similar to the above two companies.
  4. Netsounds – www.netsounds.com is not a single shop or entity but represent a wide variety of vendors worldwide. It is however a brilliant site if you need to locate that one record that you have been having difficulty in locating. They have a very fast and efficient search section that immediately locates any title or artist for you. Various parameters can be searched efficiently and quickly. This company can essentially be seen as an administrator of various companies and only facilitates the actual transaction as such. As they represent various companies they generally route the information and keep the various companies in line as far as business principles are concerned. The international grading for vinyl is in use indicating new and used formats and software.
  5. Esprit International – www.eil.com one of the most respected suppliers of collectable titles and general vinyl. They also specialize in related music or artist items, e.g. memorabilia and promotional material as well. A very good source of Japanese vinyl pressings and other rarities.

Obviously all the sites as mentioned above trade in various formats, so one has to specify vinyl as the format. There are a few interesting sites that trade mainly in vinyl only and the most interesting of these is a company called LP Now (www.lpnow.com). They are specialists in buying up old deleted stock from companies and then sell it off at very reasonable prices. So if you wished you had bought that certain title many years ago but never did, and now you cannot get hold of it, they might just be the solution. Although they do new vinyl as well they really do specialize in deleted titles. The average price for such titles is USD 7-00 per title. Please bear in mind that these deleted titles are not used records, but they are easily identified by a small cut or saw mark on the spine of the record sleeve or by a small hole punched out of the cover. That is however a small price to pay for a title that is otherwise absolutely new and unplayed, but more importantly actually available!

There are many individual stores that have built up very loyal and large followings and you are bound to run into them. The best advice that we can give is to build up a relationship with certain reliable suppliers and request or register to receive updates on certain titles or artists that they receive stock of. There are many suppliers that specialize in certain main genres, e.g. Psychedelia, 60’s, Electronic, dance, rock, pop, etc. Don’t be afraid of weird names e.g. The Left Legged Pineapple, Psychotron, and others.

Unfortunately there are not many vendors in South Africa that can viably make a continued living on vinyl software sales only, and the one or two hi-fi equipment suppliers that sell and offer certain software do have either high grade audiophile or limited catalogues available. There are however a few exception:

  1. Audionut Music – www.audionut.co.za can be visited and you can order online and do payments accordingly. Contact person Mark Eardly. You can also register to receive a regular vinyl update of new releases and have a chat about various recordings or versions.
  2. S.A Vinyl – www.savinyl.co.za is a website run by the friendly and helpful Barney Stathakis and is based in Pretoria. Barney supplies use and new vinyl and is a veritable mine of knowledge and information and can get you just about anything. Barney also specializes in Beatles, is a big fan of The Byrds and can probably get you very interesting and creative recordings that are a bit out of the ordinary.

There are a few places where vinyl can be bought that sometimes lead to really seriously good bargains, but consistency can never be guaranteed. Car boot sales, flea markets, library or thrift markets sometimes bring forth one or two gems, but more often than not the level of quality can be terrible. So buy with caution. It is certainly true that good quality turntables with well-engineered tone arms with small tolerances and good quality cartridges can minimize noise levels during playback, but a damaged record remains exactly that – a damaged record. Also be aware of the fact that such purchases invariably do not have any form of exchange or warranty. You buy and use what you get.

The general problem with vinyl is that we have to accept that it is a format that works because of the physical interface of stylus and record surface, so there has to be a logical amount of wear and tear as time passes. It is totally unreasonable to expect all records to always be flawless and absolutely noise-free. But also make certain that the company will have an exchange scheme or policy for new records that are damaged.

Please remember that there are so many vendors out there and that we have never had it so good as far as choice is concerned. We trust that you will have fun in discovering those elusive titles that you always wanted to get but never did. Happy listening!__________________________________________________________

24-06-2009 - DVD still dominant over Blu-Ray and downloads
DVD Still Dominant Over Blu-ray and Downloads
A “Entertainment Trends in America” report shows that 63% of consumer entertainment media spending is still going towards DVDs, beating Blu-Ray spending and downloads by a wide margin.

The report shows that 18% of spending is on Blu-Ray rentals and 7% on purchases, 9% is spent on video on demand services and 3% is spent on digital downloads.  This report did not look at free digital streaming sites, such as Hulu.com, which might have altered the results.  About 9% of consumers did report accessing paid streaming sites, compared to 5% last year.

Early adopters of digital downloads are also more likely to be DVD and Blu-ray purchasers.  80% of those using digital downloads also buy or rent DVDs and 25% buy or rent Blu-ray discs.  While discs are the most widely available option for consumers, the available methods of obtaining digital delivery are increasing rapidly.  Beyond delivery via cable boxes or satellite receivers, high definition content is also rolling out through streaming set-top boxes and game consoles.

While DVD continues to reign in the majority of sales, it's falling behind rapidly in technical capabilities.  This week, Warner announced a social networking function being included in their upcoming Blu-ray Watchmen release.  Connecting over BD-Live, the disc will allow users to link up their Facebook friends list and choose a group of friends to simultaneously watch the movie while making comments.  The Watchmen release will also receive a same-day digital download launch on the day that physical copies are released.

07-06-2009 - B&W present the Panorama

Bowers & Wilkins present the Panorama at CES

The Bowers & Wilkins Panorama is the ideal way of upgrading your flatscreen TV’s sound. Amazing audio quality with surround sound and stereo. Active centre speaker for wonderful movie sound. Simple connection and set up. A true one-box solution: no subwoofer required.

Download the T3-Magazine review of the B&W Panorama in our review section, or click here to go to our B&W review page.
Bowers & Wilkins’ Panorama will do for your flatscreen TV what the iconic Zeppelin did for your iPod® – enhance its sound quality beyond what you imagined possible. And just like the Zeppelin, along with that amazing audio comes intuitive control and stylish design.

The Panorama is the result of intensive research by B&W’s renowned engineering team at its UK Research and Development division in Steyning, West Sussex. It includes technologies originally developed for high-end speakers such as the legendary 800 Series, and uses them to bring a new level of performance to soundbars.

Using a combination of multiple drive units and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) the Panorama not only boosts the quality of your TV to unprecedented levels, it also provides users with an immersive surround performance from a single speaker. The wide ‘sweet spot’ it is capable of creating allows more people to experience the effect together, making it the ideal family entertainment system.

The vast majority of sound from even the most effect-heavy movie soundtrack is delivered through the centre speaker in a surround sound system, and B&W has worked hard to get this aspect of the Panorama spot on. Of the nine drive units housed within the Panorama’s aluminium casework, five are utilised in the active centre speaker: two bass woofers, two midrange drivers and an aluminium dome tweeter featuring B&W’s Nautilus™ Tube Loaded technology.

The other four drive units provide the rest of the sound, and each one is located within its own enclosure to maintain a purity of performance. All the drive units are powered by six class D amplifiers, providing a combined power output of 175Watts.

This combination means the Panorama is a true one-box solution. It provides more than enough bass output for the vast majority of living rooms, and only if you have the system in a particularly large room would you need to add a subwoofer such as Bowers & Wilkins’ award-winning PV1.

Adding a Panorama to your TV does more than simply enhance your movie viewing. Computer games companies spend as much on surround sound tracks for the latest games as most Hollywood films, and the Panorama will enhance your gaming experience.

It’s not just about surround sound though, as unlike other soundbars the Panorama is a highly impressive stereo speaker. Whether you are listening to music from television broadcasts, from an iPod or CD player, or even as part of a multi-room system, where the Panorama’s active design makes it an ideal partner, you’ll be blown away by its output.

The purist, simple approach to design continues with connection and set up. There’s no messing around with video cables; simply take digital coaxial or optical or even analogue from your source component or television and let the Panorama work its magic. However, if you want to connect more to the Panorama than simply a Blu-ray player or Sky HD box you can, thanks to the inclusion of two optical digital inputs, one coaxial digital input and two stereo analogue inputs.

Panorama is designed to partner a flatscreen TV, and offers flexibility when it comes to positioning. It can be placed on its own feet or attached to the wall using the supplied bracket for wall-mounted screens.

However the Panorama is positioned, there can be little doubting its beauty. Stylishly crafted in the same manner as its sibling the Zeppelin, the Panorama mixes sleek black with a shining aluminium panel to produce the best looking soundbar on the market, and one that it is designed to complement the looks of the latest flatscreen televisions, not detract from them. It is designed to partner flatscreen televisions, from 37inches upwards.

The Panorama will be available from July 2009.

24-06-2009 - Impressive LED-TV technology explored
We're impressed with the new "LED-TV" from Samsung, so we've decided to examine the technology behind these ultra-slim panels

Here are the facts:

Samsung use an LED backlight instead of the standard Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (LCD-CCFL) as used in most LCD televisions. It is important to distinguish this method of backlighting a conventional LCD panel, with a true LED display, or an OLED display. Televisions described as 'LED TVs' are vastly different from the self-illuminating OLED, OEL or AMOLED display technologies.

There are several methods of backlighting an LCD panel using LEDs including the use of either White or RGB (Red, Green and Blue) LED arrays positioned behind the panel; and Edge-LED lighting, which uses white LEDs arranged around the inside frame of the TV along with a special light diffusion panel designed to spread the light evenly behind the LCD panel.

An LED backlight offers several general benefits over regular CCFL backlight TVs, typically including lower power consumption and higher brightness. Compared to regular CCFL backlighting, there may also be benefits to colour gamut. However advancements in CCFL technology mean wide colour gamuts and low power consumption are also possible. The principal barrier to wide use of LED backlighting on LCD televisions is cost.

The variations of LED backlighting do offer different benefits. The first commercial LED backlit LCD TV was the Sony Qualia 005 (introduced in 2004). This featured RGB LED arrays to offer a colour gamut around twice that of a conventional CCFL LCD television (the combined light output from red, green and blue LEDs produces a more pure white light than is possible with a single white light). RGB LED technology continues to be used on selected Sony BRAVIA LCD models, with the addition of 'local dimming' which enables excellent on-screen contrast through selectively turning off the LEDs behind dark parts of a picture frame.

Edge LED lighting was also first introduced by Sony (September 2008) on the 40inch ZX1 BRAVIA. The principal benefit of Edge-LED lighting for LCD televisions is the ability to build thinner housings (the ZX1 BRAVIA is as thin as 9.9mm) and Samsung's range of Edge-LED lit LCD televisions (described incorrectly as "LED TVs") also sport thin housings. Edge-lighting however is at risk of a loss of screen uniformity compared to back-lighting.

LED-backlit LCD TVs are considered a more sustainable choice, with a longer life and better energy efficiency than plasmas and conventional LCD TVs. Unlike CCFL backlights, LEDs also use no mercury in their manufacture, however other elements such as gallium and arsenic are used in the manufacture of the LED emitters themselves, meaning there is some debate over whether they are a significantly better long term solution to the problem of TV disposal.

Because LEDs are able to be switched on and off more quickly than CCFL displays and can offer a higher light output, it is theoretically possible to offer very high contrast ratios. They can produce deep blacks (LEDs off) and a high brightness (LEDs on), however care should be taken with measurements made from pure black and pure white outputs, as technologies like Edge-LED lighting do not allow these outputs to be reproduced simultaneously on-screen.

p.s Sony was the first manufacturer to produce a commercial LED-backlit LCD television with the Qualia 005 in 2004 however Samsung was the first to coin the term 'LED TV' on their 2009 range of Edge-LED lit LCD televisions. Previously Samsung had also integrated LED backlights into the 40, 48, 52, and 57-inch versions of their LN-T81F series in 2007 and their A950-series in 2008. Sony, in addition to RGB LED backlighting (still used on 46 and 55-inch versions of the BRAVIA KDL-XBR8 series), also introduced the first flat-panel monitor to use Edge-LED lighting (2008). In 2008 Sharp introduced the AQUOS LC-XS1US series, the first 52 and 65-inch HDTVs to use LED back-lighting. Vizio and LG have also announced their own LED-backlit HDTVs, scheduled to be released in 2009.

10-05-2009 - Revel introduce wireless subwoofer
The Revel® Concerta™ B120 is a high-performance powered subwoofer, designed to add essential bass response to any music or home theater system, particularly those built around Revel Concerta Series loudspeakers. The B120 subwoofer delivers accurate and authoritative bass from a surprisingly compact enclosure. Adjustable controls, parametric room equalization and multiple connection options provide unequaled placement flexibility, and allow you to optimise low-frequency performance for any listening environment. An optional wireless transmitter greatly simplifies installationFeaturing a 12” (305mm) woofer with 1½” (38mm) peak-to-peak excursion and a 250-watt (RMS) amplifier, the B120 adds serious punch with very low distortion, even at the lowest frequencies and at high output levels. A huge 2” (51mm)-diameter copper voice coil on a Kapton® bobbin, along with sophisticated cooling, contributes to impressive power handling and freedom from dynamic compression.
The B120’s proprietary woofer diaphragm is constructed of micro ceramic composite (MMC), a new material created by adonizing both sides of an aluminum core adds strength and stiffnews – but very little weight – to a material already well suited for use in transducer diaphragms. The B120 spider incorporates a superior-strength Nomex®/cotton blend with optimized geometry for increased linearity.

With an optional TX1 wireless transmitter connected to your audio system, the B120 can be placed anywhere in your room within reach of an AC outlet. One or two B120 subwoofers can be operated with a single TX1 transmitter.

The B120 cabinet is constructed of rigid MDF with extensive internal bracing to reduce cabinet-induced colorations. A downward-firing port allows for placement against a wall or in a cabinet. Rubber-padded feet ensure optimal stability on any floor surface.

10-05-2009 - Vinyl gaining popularity
"Several sources are pointing to a need to look back to old technology for our audio needs – the classic sound of vinyl appears to be gaining in popularity, even as newer technologies strive to replace it.  In 2008, vinyl sales totalled 1.88 million units, which is 89% more than the previous year, as reported by Neilson SoundScan.

Additionally, over 670K albums have been sold in 2009.  The LA Times reports that in one of the most highly populated cities in the world, record sales are growing, more record stores are opening and business is booming with collectors and casual listeners alike as clientele.  All of these record sales are pushing integrators to offer turntables for their clients, which might also help the sales of records in a feedback loop.

While CD sales have been on a consistent decline since the emergence of digital download services like iTunes, vinyl seems to be making up a portion of the CD losses.  A CD cost approximately $14 while a vinyl LP averages around $23.  The music industry has taken notice and is re-mastering versions of their best selling albums complete with the original artwork.

Despite the renewed interest in collecting vinyl records, small record stores may be in jeopardy from competition from Best Buy.  Best Buy, the third largest music retailer, is reportedly mulling a nationwide push to sell vinyl LP's in all of its 1020 stores.  They are running a test across approximately 100 stores and are creating about 8 feet of floor space in all of their stores to hold 200 albums.  Alternatively, their 16 to 20 feet of floor space for CD's holds about 8000 CDs.

One thing is for sure; vinyl is experiencing a welcome re-emergence for a larger audience of music collectors."

26-01-2009 - Furutech Vinyl Record Flattener

Many customers have warped records that they find difficult to play (or probably even impossible to play). There have been numerous attempts at getting records flat again after such damage has occurred, but all these attempts have been with glass panels, Perspex, acrylic sheets, etc. and have never been very successful as the common problem has always been the fact that the heating process could never be controlled over an extended period of time. Typically individual consumers would use ovens at very low temperatures or even worse, use the sun. Suffice to say that many attempts would inevitably end in failure. Depending on the severity of the damage and level of warp many people would try as they would not have too much to loose, as the record would probably not have been playable anymore anyway.

The Furutech Vinyl Flattener, manufactured by Orb High End Systems of Japan, works with two perfectly flat glass panels with an attached clamp system and contains an entire heater grid on both sides of the unit internally to evenly distribute the heat over the full surface of the record. It heats at a very moderate level and various time durations can be selected for the heating process (obviously depending on how severe the warp is) ranging from as little as one hour to a maximum of three hours. The heating period is always followed by a compulsory but gentle and gradual two hour cooling down period. In the highly unlikely event that the warp still needs treatment the process can be repeated. What comes out after the entire process is a perfectly flat and playable vinyl record without any deformity or stressed grooves.

The cost of such a machine is high due to the advanced filaments and heating system employed, and the exchange rate has not been kind to potential purchasers either. There are individual users that have really large collections and can justify the purchase based on the frequency of use. Typical users are record clubs, collectors, vinyl service providers and specialist vinyl record importers and stores. Generally a few vinyl buddies also get together and purchase one collectively and then use it on a time-allotment basis. The current cost of the unit is R 22664-00, VAT inclusive. Together with vinyl record cleaners vinyl flatteners can offer a full and comprehensive range of professional service solutions for normal individual users.

09-11-2008 - Laser-based Television is here

Mitsubishi Announces Retail Availability of World's First Laser-Based Television

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America announced immediate availability of the world's first, laser-powered television. The Mitsubishi LaserVue 65" model is now being sold for $6,999 (over R70,000) at select specialty retailers in the USA. Mitsubishi said sales are already strong.

The company says LaserVue is being marketed as the most energy efficient large-format, high-definition television available on the market today, with two times the color of many of today's HDTVs, but using exponentially less power than LCD and plasma TVs.

Laser beams, says Mitsubishi, provide an extensive range complex colors, along clarity and immersive depth of field, and has been demonstrated to deliver color gamut in excess of 200 percent of BT.709 -- two times the color of many HDTVs.

25-10-2008 - Latest Ortofon update

  • Due to increased world-wide sales Ortofon have decided to re-introduce the OM3E at the very basic entry level as they feel that it would be important to offer a good quality cartridge that is fuss-free but has a very low selling price. This way they would be able to offer an easy way to get back into vinyl. Both the OM3E and OM5E will have a minor update. The OM5E will also have an OM mounting tool from the 1st of January 2009.
  • The OMP5E will be discontinued and will be replaced by the OMP10.
  • The SPU Silver Meister will be discontinued when stock is sold out.
  • Ortofon celebrates it’s 90th birthday this year. To mark this occasion they will be releasing two new limited anniversary models. From a heritage point-of-view the SPU 90th Anniversary will be introduced, and on the high-end side they will be releasing the MC A90. More information will be sent out and made available on these two models as it becomes available. The pricing will coincide with the new prices in January and the two new items will probably only appear as stock items at the same time. The relevance of the SPU is not as high but we are bound to get certain enquiries from the public regarding the relevance of the MC A90 and how it will stack up and compare to the MC Windfeld. It will be significantly more expensive than the MC Windfeld but is not intended as a direct replacement in any way. We are awaiting more detailed technical information from Anker Haldan of Ortofon but will keep you informed.
The ever popular Ortofon OM3E

13-09-2008 - Sony - HD control for the whole home
New Sony NHS Rack Systems Designed for Whole-House HD Control -- Validates Control4

Sony announced at CEDIA pre-integrated, pre-racked, and pre-wired NHS rack systems for total home automation -- delivery of whole house HD entertainment and control for music, movies, lighting, temperature and security.
The new models, NHS-A30C and NHS-70C, are fully integrated racks, are pre-built, wired, tested and ready for professional installation, according to Sony. They offer functions such as iPod connectivity and control, satellite radio, whole-home high-definition video distribution and advanced home automation from Control4. Could this indicate a potential partnership between Sony and Control4 that might end in an aquisition?
The new NHS-A30C rack system provides 5.1 channel, high-definition home theater with a Blu-ray Disc player, plus a second zone of distributed HD video and a third zone of audio. The system is integrated with Control4, offering automation of lighting, temperature control, and security systems through an on-screen display

The new NHS-70C system incorporates 7.1 channel surround sound high-definition home theater for the living room, plus distribution of six zones of HD video. The NHS-70C also adds a 400-disc DVD/CD changer with a disc management system, a 160GB music server, and the ability to add three auxiliary devices for connecting additional components like a high-definition cable box or a PlayStation. The system integrates Control4's HC-500 home controller, which organizes and allows users to stream music throughout the home while also offering automation of lighting, temperature control, and security systems through a large onscreen display.
Sony says typical installations will range from $15,000 to $30,000 for the NHS-A30C and $30,000 to $50,000 for the NHS-70C. The systems will be available later this year.

13-09-2008 - High end Sony Blu-Ray shown at CEDIA
Sony Announces High-End New Blu-ray Player at CEDIA -- a Reference Standard Player

Sony’s new BDP-S5000ES Blu-ray Disc player is quite pricey, at $2,000, but it’s obviously targeting the most discerning of viewers. It uses the company's newly developed HD Reality Enhancer and Super Bit Mapping technologies for improved images. It is networkable via to access BD-Live features and get firmware updates. It also is equipped with an external flash memory port and includes a 1GB Sony Micro Vault Tiny flash storage device.

An improvement over previous generations of players is this starts up quickly -- just six seconds (which is seven times faster than previous models). This has a 14-bit HD video processor (wow), and the HD Reality Enhancer continually analyzes bit by bit of the original source, sharpening edges and reproducing detail, says Sony, while reducing the effects of film grain. Sony explains that the Super Bit Mapping delivers smoother color gradation realizing true 14-bit equivalent color tone from 8-bit sources connected via HDMI.

The BDP-S5000ES incorporates Sony's new Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology that converts standard-definition signals (480i) to 1080p and outputs a full HD equivalent resolution signal to 1080p TVs via HDMI, says Sony. The company says the model even improves analog component video output thanks to 14-bit/297MHz video D/A conversion.

Additionally, the model adds Sony's new Precision Drive HD, which helps to detect and correct wobbling discs from three directions, stabilizing playback of bent or scratched Blu-ray Discs and DVDs.

The model offers 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio decoding and bit-stream output, as well as analog 7.1 channel output with Advanced Current Segment Audio D/A converters for legacy AV receivers and decoders.

The new BDP-S5000ES will be available in November for about $2,000 at Sony Style stores, online at sonystyle.com, and at retailers.

07-09-2008 - Marantz launch 2009 range

It gives us great pleasure to announce the new models in the Marantz Audio-visual range for the coming season. Following hot on the heels of the flagship Marantz AV8003 processor and MM8003 multi-channel power amplifier, new models are being released in October that share visual styling with the dynamic duo. This applies to both AV components as well as new stereo products. On the AV front the new models start with the SR4003. Rated at 80W x 7 channels with HDMI v1.1 repeater and 7.1 channel LPCM for Blu-Ray and full function learning remote control, it also has front inputs located behind an integrated flap. The SR5003 has 7 channels of 90W and has HDMI v1.3 and features a video scaler up to 1080p. Setting up is accomplished quite easily via Audyssey MultiEQ Auto speaker setup. With multiple HDMI inputs and output, video routing is simplified. The SR6003 is rated at 100W into 7 channels and also features M-DAX (Marantz Dynamic Audio eXpander), which allows the re-creation of the high frequency range by original algorithm that can be used widely on sources like MP3, WMA, FM and television to get the frequency spectrum closer to  CD quality. On both SR5003 and SR6003, video scaling is accomplished by i-Pro scaling chips from 480i to 1080p. The SR6003 has two HDMI outputs with 2 multi-room zones (1 x analog, 1 x digital) and also uses Deep Color™ and True 24FPS. With an exceptional new colour GUI (Graphics User Interface) setup of audio-visual parameters is a breeze. Furthermore, a USB audio connection on the front panel input of the amplifier fascia allows the playback of MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV files straight from a USB portable ‘flashdrive’. Finally, the new DV4003 replaces all current model DVD players and also has the new styling for continuity over the entire range. It also features HDMI v1.0 with upscaling to 1080p and is also equipped with a USB interface for MP3, WMA and DivX playback, and can also do CD ripping from USB to MP3

10-08-2008 - High Definition TV with DSTV's new HD PVR

DSTV have recently launched a new HDTV PVR. This new decoder can be used on its own or added to your existing single, dual view or PVR decoder.

HD (which stands for High Definition) has revolutionised the television experience with lifelike viewing, sharper images, more vibrant colours and precision picture quality. The image quality has up to five times more detail than your normal digital TV. HD is a digital television broadcasting system with higher resolution than traditional Standard Definition (SD) television systems.

Instead of using the conventional 625 lines to plot a TV picture, HD uses 720 or 1080 lines. In addition, the pixels in each of those lines are smaller and closer together, resulting in hugely improved picture quality, clarity and colour definition.

HD also uses more colours than SD, increasing the richness and intensity of everything you watch. Most HD programmes and movies utilise the widescreen 16:9 format and are also created with cinema-style surround sound, that you can experience in full with a compatible surround sound system. It’s the ultimate way to watch your favourite movies, series and sporting events and it’s going to deliver so much more!

To experience the full magic of HD you require the following:

  • a new HD PVR from DSTV
  • Full HD/HD ready screen (with HDMI input)
  • new satellite installation (minimum twin LNB)
  • Home theatre system (optional)
  • Phone us to discuss the options available, and how the new DSTV PVR can be integrated into your entertainment system

     03-08-2008 - Marantz AV8003/MM8003

The newly launched AV8003 processor features, amongst other things, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD decoders, supporting up to eight full-range speakers of 24-bit/96 kHz audio. There’s also support for Deep Color and 24fps with four HDMI version 1.3a inputs and two outputs. Legacy designs get the High Definition treatment too, with the AV8003 incorporating Marantz’s first built-in video scaler from Anchor Bay for enhanced video performance, with upconversion and scaling to 1080p from all analogue and digital sources. The THX Ultra2-certified AV8003 goes even further: movie and music files stored on a PC or network get the same HD treatment thanks to a built-in digital media player which streams audio and video content throughout a networked home. The AV8003 can then fire this all over the home, including high definition video via HDMI for the main viewing room, component video to the second room, with third room independent audio capability. Even your digital audio in MP3, WAV or AAC format will sound as originally recorded thanks to the built-in Marantz Digital Audio Expander. For total connectivity and flexibility, the AV8003 features eight balanced outputs for ultra low noise connection to the power amp (even over long cable runs), two balanced inputs, RS-232c, direct IR inputs and DC triggers.

The perfect partner for the AV8003 is the MM8003. It has a massive high-current, audiophile-grade, oversized toroidal power transformer, which delivers a conservatively estimated 150 Watts to each of the eight channels. This works alongside custom filter capacitors, high grade audio components throughout, extensive shielding of key components, and ultra-wide bandwidth current feedback technology. The latter amplification system was originally developed for Super Audio CD signals and is ideal for the new DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD formats. The result of all this technology is an unerringly accurate tonal and image balance, allied to speed and dynamics with very low distortion. Combining with this great sound is outstanding flexibility, such as eight channels, balanced input terminals, output channel relay on/off control and a slow start to power-on function.

The Marantz AV8003 and MM8003 have been launched in South Africa and are available on demo. Please contact one of our sales staff.
